Thursday 22nd May

Today at Artclub we continued our observational drawings.

We have each chosen an object we particularly like.

Once we had completed our line drawing we had to colour it in using only two colours.

This is to start us thinking of how it will look when we print it. It was tricky to include the details with just two colours, so we used black and white also.

There was a printmaking table set up as well where we could experiment with carving our design into a block and then printing it.

We tried repeating our design in the style of Andy Warhol and there were some exciting results.

We look forward to continuing the first week back after the half term.

Thursday 15th May

Today at Artclub we started our observational drawings of the objects we have chosen to draw.  First we had a look at the art pencils and experimented with pressure and thickness of line.  Then we started our pencil drawings.

We have chosen objects that are special to us and some of us have brought in some objects from home, whilst others have chosen to use an image they have sourced - sports cars are extremely popular with our boys.

Whilst drawing was happening there was also a printmaking table set up where we could try out using Safeprint.  This is a block which can be drawn into and then when the printing paint is rolled over it's surface the embossed parts do not hold the paint and so do not print, leaving white lines.

It was fun to use the rollers and exciting to see the experimental prints that came from the process.

After having a go at drawing on the Safeprint block it tells you what may work as a print when doing your observational drawing. The drawings will be developed into patterns that will be printed in the style of Andy Warhol.

These are the experimental prints using the Safeprint block that some of us did today.

Thursday 8th May

Today we got to do some experimental printmaking.

We started by dipping our fingers into the printing paint and feeling how much stickier it is than the paint we use in class. This is because it needs to stick to the roller.

We then used rollers to apply the printing paint to lots of textured objects that were placed on the tables.

These included holey metallic foil, large chenille sticks, strips of bubble wrap, squares of hessian, leaves, lace and natural sponges.

We also used textured rollers to see what effect they made.

Ripped paper squares were rolled over to see what it is like to use a template.

Lots of fun was happening.

We looked at some prints by Andy Warhol and discussed how he used popular products, people and “things” of his day as the subject of his prints.

It was then noted how he used the same image and repeated it over and over, often changing the colours.

We then looked at some examples of “things” that are relevant to us today, like some foods, trainers, roller skates and cartoon characters.

For next week everyone should bring in an object that they would like to draw. This image, we will then go on to print on paper and then on fabric.  The fabric prints will be used to make a banner that will hang in the school mall.

Printmaking in Foundation Stage

As part of our Jungle topic we used animal prints to inspire our printmaking.

Using paper stencils we blocked out areas to make the different coloured shapes.

Here are some of the finished prints from our Reception class.  See if you can identify which jungle animal inspired each print.

Our Nursery class were busy too.  They absolutely loved the rolling – really getting stuck into it and were keen to come back the next day and put their second colour on.

Here are some of the Nursery finished pieces.

Each print was laid on to paper and then repeated on to fabric.  Watch this space to see the finished banners that will hang in the mall.

Printmaking with Key Stage 1. Week 3

During the final week of our Rainforest printmaking project we had to use all the knowledge we had learnt and produce a large finished print on both paper and fabric using two colours. Here are some of the prints after the first layer of ink was put down.

Here are some of the finished prints.

The fabric prints are going to be put together to make a series of banners that will hang in our mall.

Later, that week we held a community afternoon where we opened our hall doors to show our friends and families all the lovely printing we had been doing and also to let them have a go.
