The Big Draw in Year 3/4

Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) illustrated “Room on the Broom” by Julia Donaldson. In the hall, they plotted the journey of the witch and her companions. They worked in teams to draw fields, forests, moors and mountains, rivers and reeds. Back in class, 3/4T and 3/4M were set the task of illustrating the story. The events in the book were typed up and the children got to pick, lottery-style which event they would have to draw. When displayed in sequence the pictures were to tell the story. Mrs. Brook’s class painted large-scale illustrations of the characters and props that were in the story on old cardboard boxes to show that we don’t always have to paint on paper. They added detail with collage.

Year 5/6 pull together for the Big Draw

Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5 and 6) were first in the hall in the morning. First we warmed up our bodies so that we were ready to draw by drawing in the air with our elbows, foot, non-dominant hand and then our dominant hand. We moved on to drawing their teacher in quick poses which lasted twenty seconds with various drawing materials. We did a few of these. Then, we moved on to adding detail to somebody else’s drawing. Finally, we came back to our first drawing and changed it into something different.

Back in class the children made observational drawings of autumn vegetables executed in oil pastels. They then read “The Enormous Turnip.” This story is all about working together to get a job done and this was certainly the theme of the day. They drew around eachother lying on card, on the floor, in poses like that of the people in the story. On to these silhouettes they drew words to describe people and working together. In groups they painted and collaged an enormous turnip.

Welcome to Art Club 2015-2016

Miss Morris and I, Mrs. Chin would like to welcome all the children who have joined the Artclub after-school club. This term we are “doodling.” Miss Morris is a great “doodler” and she wanted to share her enjoyment of it with the Artclub.

Each of us has a sketchbook which will be ours to keep, so that we can doodle whenever we choose. We can stick pictures/photos/ anything we find interesting into it, which will be a wonderful source of inspiration for our doodles.

Last week and this we have been designing the cover of our sketchbooks.

Art club- Tropical World

This artwork has been made by the Artclub, an after-school club of sixteen pupils at Robin Hood Primary School, Leeds. Since November, the children have been designing and making these two paintings and models.

The first painting is inspired by the book “The Great Kapok Tree” by Lynne Cherry and was made by the Year 3 and 4 pupils. They read the book and the children agreed on the essential features within the painting. They then set about drawing their own ideas on how it should look. In these, each of the children thought about all the animals in the story and how they could place them in the painting, whilst including the sleeping man and of course, the kapok tree. First they painted the tree onto the background fabric and then over the next few weeks the children painted and collaged their animals

The book “A Walk in the Rainforest” by Kristin Joy Pratt is the stimulus behind the second painting. The Year 5/6 children chose the letters they would be working on, out of a basket, and researched and drew things you will see in the rainforest beginning with those letters. They each completed several paintings.

We then took our 2d designs of the animals and made them three dimensional. They are made from recyclable materials like plastic bottles, yoghurt cartons and plastic bags stuffed with newspaper and then shaped using masking tape. A layer of paper mache and PVA glue creates a hard shell which we then painted and collaged.
