Today at Artclub the painters quickly got started on drawing the faces of the animals from our chosen story The Journey Home by Fran Preston Gannon.

Meanwhile our sculptors researched their animals of choice from the same story.  They found photographs of the animals in real-life situations and looked at them from different angles to build up their knowledge of what their model needed to look like in three dimensions.  Once they had done this, they set about developing their models they had started last week.

Thursday 28th January 2016

Today we looked at the animal models and paintings we made for our Tropical World exhibition last year.  Some of us were part of the team who created them and so we were excited to see them again.  For others it was a chance to see what animals could be made with recyclable packaging and paper mache and just how big the paintings are, that we have made before.

We then completed our pictures inspired by the book “The Journey Home” by Fran Preston Gannon and thought whether we would like to make a model or paint a picture as our main piece.

Those of us who chose to make a model of one of the animals in the story selected plastic bottles and boxes and started to build up the form of the animal. Meanwhile, those who had selected to do a painting/collage worked together to choose an image they wanted to recreate.

At Artclub we read through the book “The Journey Home” by Fran Preston-Gannon and looked at the beautiful illustrations.  The book tells the story of a polar bear who sets off to find a new home as the ice is melting and he meets some friends along the way. The book has a powerful message of conservation and it raised many interesting questions and comments among our group.

We each chose one illustration from the book and used it to make our own coloured picture.

This is the first week of Artclub this term and welcome to all new members and those who have returned.  This term we will be designing and making artwork that will be displayed at Tropical World, Leeds.

Using photographs taken in Tropical World, we built up mood boards to create a feeling of what it is like.  Most of us have visited there, but some of us have not so this was a great exercise in seeing what it is like and the different habitats it has.

Doodling

Each week we have been doodling in our sketchbooks, many of us adding to this at home.  We have seen some fabulous doodles which we will show here soon. Miss Morris brought in a cardboard coffee cup she had from a well-known coffee shop and showed us the autumnal doodles that decorated it.  This inspired some of us to reproduce the design and raised our awareness of where doodles can be used.  We then developed these ideas into our own doodles. 

Every Picture tells a Story...

Every Picture tells a Story…

…it certainly did at Robin Hood Primary School recently when the whole school took part in a day of drawing.  This is an annual event which takes place nationwide during October and is organised by the Campaign for Drawing. This year’s theme “Every drawing tells a story” was loved by the children because they had chance to illustrate some great stories.

The day began with a whole school assembly where the children came to the school hall which had been covered in a blank canvas of white paper. Here they learned the fun and importance of drawing. Throughout the day each class visited the school hall to draw.

Back in class, each phase retold one well-known story and then the children had chance to illustrate it ready for our “Big Draw” exhibition.

The Nursery and Reception children acted out “We’re Going on a Bearhunt” by Michael Rosen. They painted their own bears and the Nursery children made massive bears which they collaged with leaves, conkers and pine cones they had found as part of their home-learning. Years 1 and 2 (pictured) collaged a giant beanstalk, decorated golden eggs and made magic beans from tissue paper - mached balloons. There was also an enormous giant “as big as the ceiling” one pupil said. The characters from “Room on the Broom” by Julia Donaldson made an appearance and there was an “Enormous Turnip” the size of a small car.

 At the end of the school day each class proudly brought their artwork to the school hall to display it for the Big Draw Exhibition which was open to the community after school, the next day.
