Thursday 18th October

Today we made the most of the Autumn sunshine by being outside for Artclub.

We paper mached the models we made last week.  Again we worked in our pairs and glued and stuck our models.

Next week we will be applying a layer of white paper over the newsprint so that we can successfully paint the models light colours if we wish.

They are looking terrific already.  We cannot wait until they are ready to paint.

Thursday 11th October

Today at Artclub we started to make our sculptures of butterflies and dragonflies.  When they are finished they will be on display in one of the community rooms at the Children's Centre in Lofthouse.

We worked in pairs and we chose whether we wanted to make a butterfly or a dragonfly.

We used plastic bags and stuffed them with newspaper to create the shapes we needed and then we wrapped masking tape or sticky tape around the shape to reinforce them.

The butterfly heads were made in the same way and attached to the body, then too, were the wings.

The dragonflies had long skinny bodies and their wings needed to be ultra thin.  We strengthened card and drew the wings.  These we then attached to the bodies.

Can I say how enthusiastic everybody was making these and Mrs Mistry and myself are amazed at the sculptures that have been made.  Next week we will be paper macheing so please remember to bring an art shirt to protect your uniform.

Thursday 4th October

At Artclub today we made the most of the beautiful weather and painted outdoors.

We worked in two groups.  The first group experimented with mixing colours.  We started with our primary colours (red, blue and yellow) and combining two of these colours, mixed our secondary colours (green, orange, purple). We added white to lighten some of the colours and painted all our colours on to cut-out shapes that will make up a giant collaborative butterfly.  We made some lovely colours and we invented names for them, such as "Chocolate Brownie", "Sunset Orange", "Pinky Pink" and there truly was a "Sky Blue Pink"! We had great fun and could not resist mixing all the colours together which resulted in a purply brown.

The other group painted their salt - dough models made last week.  These were  butterflies or dragonflies. We used some lovely bright colours and lots of glitter. We then added some sequins to decorate them, remembering to keep the pattern symmetrical.

Half way through the the session we swapped over, so we had a turn at both activities.

Here are our fabulous creations.  Hope you like them.

Thursday 27th September

Today we made models of butterflies and dragonflies from salt dough and worked on our symmetrical drawings continued from last week.

We are developing our knowledge of butterflies and dragonflies and practising our skills to make our big sculptures for one of the Community Rooms at the Children's Centre, Lofthouse.

We were thinking how a butterfly and dragonfly look in three dimensions.

We would have loved to have studied some real ones but instead we looked at images of real-life sculptures of butterflies and dragonflies made by artists.

Some of us chose to make butterflies and others, dragonflies.  We all appreciated that their bodies needed to be rounded, but the salt dough proved sticky and we just could not get the angle of the wings we were looking for, to imitate flight.

When we build our big sculptures we will paper mache the bodies and experiment with wire and card to create the wings.  How exciting!

The models are now drying out and next week we will paint and decorate them using the skills of creating symmetry we practised last week.

We will also have some big painting going on outside in Nursery's playground under the canopy.

Thursday 20th September

A huge welcome to KS1 Artclub! We have a new venue, which is Nursery.  So parents please collect straight from the Nursery doors...and a super new project.

We have been asked by the Children's Centre, based at Rodillian school, Lofthouse to turn one of their community rooms into a Butterfly and Dragonfly room.

As you can see there are some butterflies hanging from the ceiling which gave them the idea.  The artclub are going to make some large scale sculptures to hang from the ceiling.  These we will design, create and decorate over the next few weeks.

Today we coloured in line drawings of butterflies and dragonflies.  We were allowed to choose which we wanted to do.

We talked about what was important in nature's design of these insects.  They were "Beautifully coloured", "patterned", "had wings", "had the same patterns on both sides" and were "symmetrical".

This we then practised. We were careful to keep our colouring in the lines and shade in one direction.
This prompted us to have some background music playing whilst we coloured, so we started with One Direction's "What makes you beautiful"

Some of us completed the colouring and then designed our own butterfly / dragonfly.

Next week we are going to look at the shape of the butterflies and dragonflies and make some models out of salt dough.  This will encourage us to think three dimensionally.

Please can you all remember an artshirt or old T shirt.

The Finished Paintings!

May we present the three completed paintings for Beechwood Dental Care in Woodlesford made by our Reception Artclub.

The first painting is based on the children's story "Titus's Troublesome Tooth" by Linda Jennings and Gwyneth Williamson.  It is depicted as a comic strip where the children have told the story through pictures with their written descriptions of how Titus's farmyard friends are going to help him get his tooth out!

The second painting is inspired by Audrey Wood's book "Tooth Fairy".  It shows a cross section of the Tooth Fairy's castle.  At the top the Tooth Elves are seen building a bridge out of the teeth the Tooth Fairy has collected.  In the middle the Tooth Fairy is showing off the Hall of Perfect Teeth to her two guests, Jessica and Matthew.  At the bottom the Tooth Robots are hard at work cleaning the "not so perfect teeth" in the Tooth Dungeon, making them as good as new.

The third painting is a scene from "Bear's Loose Tooth" by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman.  Bear has his first wobbly tooth and his friends, Mole, Hare, Owl, Wren and others try desperately to pull it out.

It was great to see all the paintings side by side in the entrance to Beechwood Dental Care in Woodlesford.  We took our families and friends along to see what we had made and we had our photograph taken for the Rothwell Record.  The article should be in September's issue.

Mr. Reid, the dentist said that the paintings were helping his patients relax as they came into the building and they were a talking point.

Well done Reception Artclub from myself, Mrs. Chin and Mrs. Mistry.  It has been an absolute pleasure working on this project with you.

We have made something together that lots of people will enjoy looking at every day.

Thursday 5th July

Today was our last session of Reception Artclub before our visit to Beechwood Dental Care in Woodlesford.

We had lots of finishing off to do.

Thankyou to Miss Pyatt and Miss McSorely who helped as well.

There were animals to complete, a Tooth Fairy to dress and teeth to place on their pedestals...

After Artclub today, the paintings will have borders sewn around them and fixings applied so they can be hung at Beechwood Dental Care in Woodlesford.

We are so excited to see all the paintings exhibited together, side-by-side, when we visit Beechwood Dental Care in two weeks!
